In 1995 three members of the Rotary Club formed Age Concern Wigan Borough (now renamed Age UK Wigan Borough), This provides a wide range of services for the elderly throughout the borough. It has offices in Market Street and Pennyhurst Mill Wigan and newly opened charity shop in Standishgate.
Through the incredible support of the community, medical, religious, health and political bodies the Rotary Club raised £86,000 (today equivalent to over £500,000) to establish the first hospice in Poolstock. It opened in 1983.
This 5Km fun run event started in 2004 held in in Haigh Parkland before moving to DW Stadium and in the ten years it ran raised the equivalent of £100,000 for men’s cancer research. In later years supporting the local Wigan charity Men Matters Appeal.
December is the clubs major fund raising month when Santa and his sleigh tour the district. Thanks to the Wigan public’s generosity it raised over £12000 last December which will be donated to charities and voluntary organisations both locally and overseas.
Now firmly established in the summer programme the Community Day in Wigan town centre along with number of concerts and recitals.
